CREATING SPACES NW DUMFRIES

A community-led arts and wellbeing programme connecting Lochside, Lincluden, Summerhill and Sandside through creativity, collaboration and place.

About the project:

We are delighted to have been awarded £282,199 through the Scottish Government’s Culture Collective fund, administered by Creative Scotland, to deliver a new 18-month community arts and wellbeing programme across Northwest Dumfries.

Creating Spaces NW Dumfries will bring together the communities of Lochside, Lincluden, Summerhill and Sandside, working with local people, artists and community organisations to create meaningful opportunities for creative participation close to home.

The project will embed artists within neighbourhoods and community spaces, working alongside residents to develop creative projects that reflect the stories, strengths and ambitions of each area.

We want to create opportunities for people to take part, try something new, meet others and see their own experiences and ideas reflected in the places where they live.

Creativity in the community:

North West Dumfries is home to around half of Dumfries’ population and has strong community networks and a wealth of local knowledge and creativity. At the same time, communities across the area experience challenges including poverty, poor mental health, social isolation and limited access to cultural opportunities.

Creating Space NW Dumfries will build on the strengths that already exist, working through trusted local organisations and relationships to make creative activity more accessible. Rather than bringing a programme into the area, we will work with communities to develop projects that respond to local interests, ideas and needs.

The programme will create opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in arts activity, develop confidence and skills, connect with others and contribute to the cultural life of their own neighbourhood.

Art & Wellbeing Trail

A key part of Creating Space NW Dumfries will be the development of an Art & Wellbeing Trail. The Trail will bring together a connected network of creative installations, activities and community-owned spaces across the four neighbourhoods.

Developed with local people and artists, it will encourage people to explore their local area, discover creative activity and connect different communities across North West Dumfries.

The Trail will also provide a lasting legacy from the project, creating new opportunities for people to experience creativity in the places where they live.

Building on our Work

Creating Space NW Dumfries builds on OutPost Arts’ ongoing work to develop creative health and wellbeing opportunities across Dumfries & Galloway.

Our DG Creative Wellbeing programme has established partnerships across community, care and healthcare settings, creating new opportunities for people to experience the benefits of taking part in creative activity.
This project allows us to take that learning into a new setting, working alongside communities to explore how creativity can support wellbeing, connection and a stronger sense of place.

The project also builds on LIFT D&G’s grassroots community work and the learning of the What We Do Now (WWDN) network, coordinated by The Stove Network.

Together, these partnerships bring valuable experience of creative placemaking, community development and creative wellbeing.
